Profile

The history of the community band in Muncie goes back to the 1870’s with the Lockwood Band. The present band, formed in 1985, is the latest in a rich legacy of providing this musical public service.

    Concert Band:
This is a traditional concert band of 50-60 musicians. Complete with all the bells and whistles, we use percussion, woodwind, and brass players on instruments such as drums, flutes, and horns.

    Ceremonial Band:
This is a band of 25-30 musicians that performs for smaller civic functions such as the Memorial Day Service. All sections of the band are represented in this group, but in smaller numbers.

    Jazz Band:
Directed by Dr. Phillip Cooley, this is a group that plays popular big band tunes for special occasions. We have saxes, trumpets, trombones, and percussion to liven up your evening and get the joint jumpin’.

    Chamber Ensembles:
These groups are heard throughout the year and consist of 4-10 players. For example, we have both a flute choir and a trombone choir who play special arrangements of classical and popular tunes.
